Set up:
Step by Step:
Warm Up

1. Participants walk quickly around the activity area.
2. When you call out "Get Down", participants quickly crouch down and then get back up and continue walking.
3. Challenge participants to get up as quickly as possible.
4. For variety, choose participants to identify different ways of traveling (e.g. hop, skip, walk backwards). (From Ophea, H&PE Curriculum Support Documents, Junior, Appendix B, 2000.)

Steps

1. Participants stand in a circle formation and take turns leading other students in their activity.

2. After 30 seconds, the participant leading turns to the student on the right and says, "It’s Your Move".

3. The new leader continues to lead the others in their new activity.

4. Continue until all participants have had 2 chances to lead the group.

5. Activities could include: Downhill skiing, Ice hockey, Cross country skiing, Speed skating, Curling Snow shoveling, Jogging, Walking in deep snow, Figure skating, Jumping jacks, Dance moves, Stride jumps, Slalom skiing, Ice climbing, Snowboarding, Snow biking

Cool Down

1. Participants walk around the activity area in pairs quietly discussing topics you give them (e.g. your favorite way to be physically active with your friends).
2. Give them a new topic to discuss every 30-60 seconds.
3. Encourage participants to gradually slow their walking speed.
4. Lead or have a participant lead, a stretching routine (for sample stretches, see Ontario Ministry of Education, Daily Physical Activity in Schools Grades 7-8, Appendix C or www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/teachers/dpa7-8.pdf).
Variations:
In the warm-up instead of calling out "Get Down", reinforce concepts learned in class and have participants "get down" when they hear key words (e.g. call out cities and participants "get down" when they hear a capital or call out numbers and have participants "get down" when they hear a multiple of 6).
This activity can be done in small groups and then as a whole group.
Music can be very motivating. Encourage participants to use upbeat music that they enjoy.

Adaptations (General):
Encourage participants with a disability to identify different ways of travelling (e.g., on stomach, while blindfolded, etc).

Encourage participants with a disability to introduce and lead adapted activities (e.g., sit skiing or blindfolded skiing, sledge hockey, adapted curling, adapted snowboarding, etc)

Adaptations (Mobility Impairment):
Some participants with a disability may be unable to crouch or perform quick movements, so try to keep this In mind during the warm-up.
