12 (or so) pylons
1 beanbag or type of marker per participant (optional)
Objective:
For participants to practice the three steps that make up a triple jump: hopping, skipping and jumping at different stations.
Other Skills:
Coordination
Speed
Set up:
Set up different "triple jump" stations.
Please see the attached document for example of stations and set up.
One station could have a rope, four (or so) pylons set up in a staggered line, and one pylon around 10 feet in front of those pylons.
Another station could have 3 pylons set up in a row, then another pylon around 10 feet in front of those, and a third pylon around 10 feet in front of that one.
A third station could have just one pylon. Optional to add more pylons along the side and create a "sand pit" at the end.
Step by Step:
1. At each station, participants will practice their hopping, skipping and jumping; the three steps in a triple jump.
2. The first couple stations are meant to get participants warmed up and having fun with the three steps in a triple jump.
3. Participants can do the same station a couple times before moving onto another one. Or participants all have to do the first station, then the second and then the third.
4. The last station allows participants to practice the triple jump just like Olympians (minus the sand pit, unless there happens to be one in the field, then bonus!).
5. Please see attached document for example of stations and set up.
6. At the first station, participants will hop on one foot, side to side along the rope. Then they will skip and weave around the set of 4 pylons. After they get to the last pylon in the skipping section, they will run to the last pylon and take off jumping as far as they can.
7. At the second station, participant will start at the first pylon and hop on one foot to the second pylon, then switch feet and hop on the other foot to the next pylon. As soon as they get to the last pylon at the hopping section, they will begin to skip until they get to the next pylon in the station. When they get there, they will run to the last pylon and jump as far as they can.
8. At the final station, participants will practice doing each step all together, known as the triple jump.
9. Starting at the pylon, participants will begin to run and then after they have ran 10 meters or so they will hop, then skip (which will look like a large step), and jump. These three steps take place one after the other. As soon as the participant hops, the next step they take is a skip, and as soon as they land the skip, they jump.
10. Optional to place pylons along this station to give an indication to participants on when to start their triple jump. After they do one triple jump, then can do another.
Optional to create a "sand pit" using beanbags or pylons at the end of the last station. This will be the area that the participants have to jump into with their last triple jump. Outside the pit, participants could place their own token/marker to mark how far they jumped.
Variations:
Create different triple jump stations.
Allow younger participants to take some extra steps in between each part of the triple jump.
