Set up:
Divide participants into groups of 4-5 participants (ideal to have a minimum of 3 teams).
Have each group select a country that is participating in the world cup (for a list of teams, visit the FIFA website: http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/teams/index.html). Or choose any country they wish.
Have a picture of each country's flag, or a computer for participants to look up the country's flag.
Have the flag making material prepared for the participants.
The flag making and soccer tournament can be done over a couple days, or longer.
Step by Step:
Flag Making Activity:

1. Each participant is going to get a white piece of paper, or have a selection of different coloured construction paper.
2. Participants are going to create their country's flag using the material provided.
3. If one group is France, for example, they could choose a white piece of paper, and then cut out a blue and red piece of construction paper to tape or glue on the white piece of paper. Or they can use crayons/pencil crayons/markers to colour in the red and blue sections.
4. Participants can now take a craft stick, glue popsicle sticks together or use another object to tape/glue to the side of their flag as a handle.
5. Or participants can tape the flag onto their shirt, to represent their country's team.
6. An additional step is for participants to choose a player from that team, write their last name on a piece of paper and then tape the name to the back of their shirt (or they can write their own last name).

Soccer (Football) Tournament
1. Use the outside lines of a gymnasium for the boundaries. Or play two or more games at once, and divide the gym in half using the centre line. Make sure there is a referee and/or leader for each game.
2. If outdoors, use cones to set up one or more playing fields. The size of the field is dependent on the space and skill level of the participants.
3. Please see the attached document for an example of tournament schedules and rounds.
4. Each game will be 5-10 (this is dependent on the leader and time allotted). All participants will be playing for their team together, or if the playing field is smaller, have 3-4 participants for each team playing and every minute the leader will blow their whistle and one teammate will sub off.
5. Participants can wear their flag on their shirt, or give one or both teams pinnies (try to match the pinnies to the countries colours).
6. Each participant will get a turn as goalie.
7. Remind participants of the rules of soccer, the importance of passing, throw-ins (if doing them), no hands, getting open, playing defense and offense and being a good teammate and good sport.
8. Have a participant be a referee for the games, or the leaders can be the referees.
9. HAVE FUN!
Variations:
Have groups come up with a name for a brand new country and create the flag for that country.
For older participants, play with 8-11 participants on a team and use a real soccer field outdoors.
Don't play with goalies, and have a cone set up at the back of each end, and participants have to knock down the cone in order to score.
