Other Skills:
Coordination
Set up:
Please see the attached document titled "Juggling Scarves Relay Set Up (example)" as an example of the set up for this activity. Set up as many of these relays as the space allows.
Place two pylons about 3-5 feet across from each other at the beginning, with a scarf in between them. Place another pylon and a juggling scarf next to it about 15-20 feet in front of the two pylons. Then, place another pylon, with another juggling scarf next to it about 15-20 feet in front of that pylon.
If there are a lot of participants, set up another area, using pylons if needed, and place a lot of juggling scarves in this area. Here, participants will throw all the scarves in the air, and have to catch them and throw them in the air again and try to not let any scarves fall to the ground.
Step by Step:
1. If participants have not yet practiced or used juggling scarves, please see the attached document to this activity titled "Juggling Scarves Activities", for examples of activities.

Juggling Relay:
2. Participants will get into partners.
3. Have all or some of the partners standing behind the different relay stations.
4. The first pair in each line will stand at the two pylons, so that they are facing each other.
5. One participant will take the scarf and hold it in their right hand.
6. First Step: To start, the participant will throw the scarf from their right hand to their partner's right hand (diagonal throw). Their partner will throw the scarf back to their partner's right hand. The original thrower will then switch the scarf to their left hand and throw it with that hand to their partner's left hand. That partner will catch it and then throw it to their partner's left hand. If the scarf touches the ground at any time, then the participants have to start the sequence again.
7. When participants finish this sequence, they move on to the second step
8. Second Step: The participant with the scarf will toss it as far and as high as they can towards the next pylon. The other participant will run and catch the scarf that was thrown. As soon as they catch it, they have to stop. Then they throw it as far and as high as they can and the other participant runs and catches it. Participants will continue to do this until they reach the next pylon. If the scarf drops on the ground at any point, the participants have to do 5 jumping jacks before continuing.
9. Third Step: At the next pylon is a second scarf. The participant with the scarf, will pick up the second scarf and do 3 successful juggles with the two scarves. They will hold one scarf in each hand, then throw the one in the right hand to their left hand, and right after, throw the one from the left hand to their right hand. Then their partner does the same thing.
10. They will both now run to the last pylon and complete the fourth step.
11. Fourth Step: The participant with the two scarves, will pick up the scarf at that pylon. Each participant will do 1 successful juggle with the 3 scarves. Hold two scarves in one hand and one in the other hand. They throw one of the two scarves in the air to their other hand, then the lone scarf in the air and then the second of the two scarves in the air, and catch them all.
12. If a participant tries 3 times to do a successful juggle, but can't, then that will count as complete.
13. After each participant has completed a three scarf juggle, or tried 3 times, they will put one scarf back at that pylon, run to the second pylon and place another scarf there and run to the line and give the last scarf to the next pair.
Variations:
One partner will do the double scarf juggle and the other partner will do the three scarf juggle.
Add different stations and make them easier or harder.
All the pairs behind one relay will be one team and will go against the other pairs behind the other relay(s). The team to get all their pairs through the quickest, wins.
