Activity Type: Physical, Transition

Age Group: 6 - 9yrs, 9 - 12yrs, 13+ yrs
Play area: Gymnasium (large indoor space), Outdoor - Field
Safety Considerations: Remove any safety hazards and obstacles from the play area.

Equipment: 9 hoops.
Numbers 1-9 written on a piece of paper and taped on beanbags (or tennis balls).
Beanbags/birdies/other objects to use as "points" (optional).
1 rubber chicken per group of 3-4 participants.
1 pylon per group or a rope.
List of questions prepared (with all answers being 1 to 9). Example of questions are attached to this activity. Make sure the questions are at the level of the participants.
Objective:
For participants to throw their chicken in the correct numbered hoop.
Other Skills:
Coordination
Set up:
Divide the participants into groups of 3-4.
Set up 9 hoops, in a 3 by 3 square.
Place the beanbags with numbers on them in the hoops. Top left can be 1, top middle is 2, top right is 3, middle left is 4 and so on.
Set up a pylon for each group or a rope for participants to stand behind. The distance of the pylons/rope from the hoops is dependent on the skill level of the participants (need to be able to throw the chicken into the hoops).
Step by Step:
1. The first participant in each team will stand at their pylon, or behind the rope, holding a rubber chicken. Use different coloured chickens, or make each team's chicken unique so that they are easy to tell apart.
2. The leader will ask a question from their list of questions, whose answer will always be a number for 1 to 9. Example of questions are attached to this activity.
3. As soon as the leader finishes asking the question, participants will throw their chicken and try to get it in the numbered hoop they believe is the correct answer. Could have a word to tell participants they can throw their chicken, such as: "Throw" or "Go" or "Chicken" etc.
4. They are not allowed to throw before the leader finishes asking the whole question. If they do, the leader can allow them to retrieve their chicken or they are out for that round.
5. If team A was the only team to get their chicken in the right hoop, then they get a point. This could be a beanbag the team gets, or if indoors could use a board to mark down points.
6. If team A and team C both got their chicken in the right hoop, then the team who got their chicken in the hoop first will get the point.
7. The teams that did not get a point, will all have to do 5 jumping jacks.
8. If after the first throw, no participants are correct, then the leader will say "Try Again", and all participants will run and collect their chicken. They will go back to their pylon/rope and throw again until a participant is correct.
9. Example: If the leader asks "How many wheels does a unicycle have", then the participant who throws their chicken in hoop #1 first, gets the point.
10. The participants collect their chickens and give them to the next participant for each team.
11. The leader will read a new question.
12. Continue until a team gets a certain amount of points, or for a set amount of time.
Variations:
Use a tennis ball, foam ball, soccer ball or another object to throw/kick, instead of chickens.
Could space out the hoops and don't have them in order to make it harder.
Have 1 beanbag in a hoop to represent that it is number 1, then have 2 beanbags in a hoop to represent that it is number 2, and so on.
Have hoops represent A-D and ask multiple choice questions. Add two hoops for "true" and "false".
Only have 1-5 to make it easier for participants.
Participants throw from further away.
Participants have to run and stand in the correct hoop.
Have the questions be all math related. Such as equations and geometry (sides of a shape).
Have the questions all about spelling and words. Such as, how many vowels are in the word "boat", or how many letters in the word Ontario?
