Activity Type: Physical, Transition
Group Size: Large Group, Medium Group, Small Group
Age Group: 6 - 9yrs, 9 - 12yrs, 13+ yrs
Play area: Gymnasium (large indoor space), Outdoor - Field
Safety Considerations: Remind participants to always be ready to catch the ball.
Remind the participant throwing the ball, to throw it softly and not too hard.
Equipment: 1 Ball
Objective:
For participants to say a word that relates to the category mentioned as soon as they catch the ball.
Other Skills:
Coordination
Set up:
Have participants stand in a circle with about an arms length between each other.
Choose one participant to start in the centre with a ball.
Step by Step:
1. The leader will tell all participants that the category is: animals (for example).
2. The participant in the centre will then say a letter, and throw the ball to a participant in the circle.
3. That participant has to catch the ball and then say an animal that starts with the letter said by the participant in the centre within 3 seconds of catching the ball.
4. The participant in the centre says 'D', then throws it to participant X, who catches it, and says 'Dog'. Since they said an animal within 3 seconds, they remain in the circle and the participant in the centre remains there.
5. Next, they say 'F', throws the ball to participant Y, they catch the ball, but can't think of an animal in time, they switch spots with the participant in the centre.
6. Or, they say 'F', throws the ball to participant Y, but they don't catch the ball. They are now in the centre, and the participant who was in the centre takes their place in the circle.
7. If it was a bad throw, and the participant couldn't catch it, then they don't switch.
8. If the participant in the centre says "Poison!", whoever they throw the ball to, cannot catch it. If they do, they trade places with the participant in the centre.
9. The leader can change categories for each new participant in the centre, or whenever they wish.
10. Other categories could be: Colour (participants have to name an object that is whatever colour the participant in the centre said), Movies (say cartoon, or a letter it has to start with), TV Show characters, cities, food etc.
Variations:
Stick to one category for the whole game.
Leader gives the participant in the middle a letter, such as, L, and the participant then has to say their own category.

Adaptations (Blindness/Visual Impairment):
Use a ball with a bell inside, or with a plastic bag tied around it, so that participants who are blind or visually impaired can hear it. Allow these participants to catch the ball on the bounce if necessary.

Adaptations (Cognitive/Learning Impairment):
It may be challenging for participants with a cognitive limitation to identify objects beginning with a given letter on the fly. Provide extra time and additional support as required.
