Protector of Middle Earth

Skill: Dodge, Run
Time Required: 15
Activity Type: Physical
Group Size: Large Group, Medium Group
Age Group: 6 - 9yrs, 9 - 12yrs, 13+ yrs
Play area: Gymnasium (large indoor space), Outdoor - Field
Safety Considerations: Remove any safety hazards from the play area.
Remind participants to always be aware of their surroundings and keep their head up when running.
Remind participants that a tag is a light touch, and not a push.
Equipment: Pylons or rope to use to mark boundaries and lines.
Objective:
For participants to run from one end to the other of the play area without getting tagged by the protector.
Other Skills:
Speed
Agility
Set up:
Create two parallel lines approximately 40 feet apart using pylons or rope, or using lines in the gym.
In the centre of those lines have two other parallel lines, approximately 10 feet apart from one another.
The area in the centre is middle earth.
Select one participant to be the protector of middle earth.
Step by Step:
1. The protector of middle earth will have to stand in the centre area, and cannot leave those boundaries.
2. All the other participants will all start behind one of the end lines.
3. When the protector says "You shall not pass!", the other participants have to run from their line to the other line beyond middle earth.
4. As soon as the participants step into middle earth, the protector tries to tag them.
5. If the protector tags a participant while they are in middle earth, they join them and now try to tag participants with them.
6. The protector, and anyone they caught, now say "You shall not pass!", and the participants have to run to the other end.
7. Participants have 5 seconds (or how ever long the leader decides) to run to middle earth, if they don't get there in that time limit, they join those in middle earth.
8. The last participant remaining is the new protector for the next round.
Variations:
Make the area for middle earth bigger or smaller.
Start with two protectors.
Have a protector on each half of the play area as well. If in a gym, they can only run along one specific line (horizontal, vertical, or curved line). If outdoors, create a line for them. If they tag a participant, that participant gets their own line, or they go into middle earth.

Adaptations (General):
Consider allowing a little more than 5 seconds for some participants with disabilities to make it to "Middle Earth".

Adaptations (Blindness/Visual Impairment):
Have another participant guide those who are blind or visually impaired.
