Remember the Item Pattern

Skill: Catch, Run, Throw
Time Required: 25
Activity Type: Physical
Group Size: Large Group, Medium Group, Small Group
Age Group: 6 - 9yrs, 9 - 12yrs, 13+ yrs

Safety Considerations: Remove any safety hazards and obstacles from the play area.
Remind participants to be aware of their surroundings and to keep their head up and be prepared to catch the ball.
Equipment: 1 ball/chicken per group (groups of 3-4).
15 or so random objects (tennis ball, beanbag, birdie, football, frisbee, pen, marker, hat, pinnie, weight, binder, box of crayons, skipping rope, ruler, foam ball etc...)
9 or so hoops per group.
Pen/pencil and paper (for leader)
Stopwatch (optional)
Objective:
For groups to throw and catch the ball/chicken while standing in the correct hoops and doing this all in the correct pattern.
Other Skills:
Coordination
Set up:
Divide participants into groups of 3-4.
Scatter 9 hoops in an area, but make sure they are still close to one another. Set up two areas with 9 hoops close to each other, if you wish to make this activity a race between two teams.
Depending on the size of the space, participants and number of leaders, there could be a set up for one group, two groups or more. If there is not enough space or equipment, have the other participants do an activity while they wait for their turn. They could help make sure the teams are doing the activity correctly.
Near each set up, place the 15 or so random objects, along with a ball or rubber chicken.
Leader should have a piece of paper with 9 out of the 15 items written on it and on a separate piece of paper, a pattern with the items that the participants have to throw their ball in. Do this for each round.
Step by Step:
1. Have two teams going against each other (or could do it one team at a time and time them).
2. The goal for each team is to put the correct items in each hoop and then throw the ball from hoop to hoop in the correct pattern.
3. Have one leader watching each team to ensure they do it correctly and to be the judge. Or have a participant be one of the judges.
4. First step is to get the correct items in the hoops.
5. The leader will list 9 items that both teams have to put in their hoops. Or have a piece of paper with the items listed on it and teams have to run and look at the paper to know what objects to put in the hoops.
6. After the leader lists off the 9 items and says "Go", or places the piece of paper down, each team will have to put one item in each hoop. Which hoop the items go in does not matter right now, they just have to put the correct items in the hoops.
7. Where they put each item could help or hurt them in the future, but they won't know until they're already done setting up.
8. When a team has put all their items in the hoops they will say "Done", and the leader will tell them if they are correct or if they have one or more items incorrect.
9. The team to finish first, gets 15 seconds off their final time.
10. Final time of what you ask? Final time of the participants throwing the ball in the correct pattern. Here's how:
11. Both teams will start next to their hoops.
12. When the leader says "Go!", they will put a piece of paper between the two sets of hoops, or hold the paper that has the pattern written on it.
13. One or two participants from each team will run and look at the piece of paper and try to memorize some or all of the pattern.
14. They will run back to their team, and repeat the pattern to them as best as they remember.
15. Now, the 3-4 participants in each team will stand in the hoops that have the items for the first 3-4 items in the pattern.
16. The participant in the first item's hoop will take the ball/rubber chicken and then throw it to the participant in the hoop with the second item. Then they will throw it to the participant in the third item's hoop.
17. Communication is key. Participants have to work together to ensure that they are throwing the ball to the correct hoops, and where to go next.
18. The participant with the ball has to remain in their hoop, however the other participants can run to the next hoops in the pattern.
19. When they make a throw to the wrong hoop, the leader will say "Wrong", "Try Again", or blow a whistle and they all have to leave their hoops. One or two participants will run to the centre with the pattern and look at it again.
20. When they get back to their group, they will repeat the pattern to the other participants.
21. Then they will start the pattern again.
22. The team to throw their ball from one hoop to the next in the correct pattern, wins! Or if timing the teams, their team's time would stop then and the other team will keep going until they are done. If team A finished first, and team B was only 10 seconds behind and they completed the first task first, then team B would win.
23. If a participant does not catch the ball, then the whole team has to leave their hoops, then run back in and start the pattern again.
Variations:
Use more or less than 9 hoops.
Have 4 or more participants per group.
Have the items already in the hoops for the participants.
Have one participant standing on the side with their backs to the group and whenever a teammate asks them "pattern please", they list off the pattern from start to finish.
Have a separate pattern for each group.
Create patterns that are longer than the number of hoops, and use items more than once in the pattern.
Don't have a pattern written down, have a rule that the pattern has to follow. Such as: alphabetical order or smallest to biggest.
