Trading Parachute Places

Skill: Run
Time Required: 10
Activity Type: Physical
Group Size: Large Group, Medium Group, Small Group
Age Group: 6 - 9yrs, 9 - 12yrs
Play area: Gymnasium (large indoor space), Outdoor - Field
Safety Considerations: Remind participants to keep their head and eyes up when running under the parachute.
Ensure the area around the activity is clear of obstacles or safety hazards.
Equipment: 1 Parachute
Objective:
For participants to trade places with another participant when their numbers are called, before the parachute lands on them.
Set up:
Have all participants holding a part of the parachute on the outside.
Ensure the area around is clear.
Step by Step:
1. Number off participants from 1 and until you get to the last participant.
2. When the leader says "Ready, Set, Fly", the participants will lift the parachute high up in the sky and as this happens the leader will call out 2 numbers (aka participants).
3. Those two participants have to run under the parachute and switch spots.
4. They have to get to their new spot before the parachute lands on them.
5. If they get to the other participant's spot without the parachute touching them, then they're both safe and the game continues.
6. If the parachute did touch one or both of them, then they get the letter "F". If the parachute touches them another time, they get an "L" and then a "Y".
7. When a participant spells "FLY", then they are out for the round (but still hold the parachute and help lift it each round).
8. Be sure to call different numbers all the time.
Variations:
Play that when the parachute hits a participant, they are out for that round. However, they stay on the outside of the parachute to help lift it.
Don't play with elimination at all.
Could call 4 participants instead of 2.
Instead of numbering off participants, give them an animal, a colour, a letter of the alphabet, a city or use their names.
Just have one participant go under and find an empty spot on the other side of the parachute. Have the participant run, skip, hop, jump to the other side.
