Equipment: No equipment necessary.
Objective:
For participants to create and remember their balance sequence.
Other Skills:
Stork Stand
Coordination
Set up:
Participants will get into partners, and stand facing each other.
Step by Step:
1. The goal for each participant is to do the balance sequence that is created by them and their partner, and then add a new step at the end.
2. The participants always have to be on one foot and balancing for each step in the sequence. However, they can add twists and extra balance movements to each step.
3. Here's an example of a sequence:
4. The first participant lifts their left foot and balances on their right foot. That will be the first step for this balance sequence.
5. Now, it's their partner's turn. They will lift their left foot and then do another action, such as, jumps on their right foot.
6. Their partner will now lift their left foot, jump on their right foot, and then clap their hands 3 times.
7. Their partner will do all 3 of those actions and then switch legs to balance on.
8. Their partner will do those 4 actions (and at the end will be standing on their left foot), and then takes their right foot and places it against their left leg's inner thigh and goes in a stork stand.
9. The first participant to lose their balance, miss a step or take longer than 5 seconds to do the next step in the sequence gets the letter "H", the first partner to spell "HEY" (or any word the leader chooses), loses that round.
10. After a participant receives a letter, they start a new sequence.
11. Example of balancing twists:
- Hop on foot
- Stork stand (one foot against the opposite leg's thigh)
- Lean forward and bring the leg that is in the air behind them.
- Swing the leg
- Do three quick feet changes
- Close eyes and clap
- Put hands on head
- Lift heel of foot on ground
- Jump in a full circle
- Crouch down lower
Variations:
Have participants do this in small groups.
Before they do this balance sequence, the leader can do their own balance sequence for the participants. This will give the participants an idea of different balancing moves and actions that the participants can do.
Could have participants clap a beat, count with "Mississippi's", and each clap the participants have to do the next step.
Could add a ball or beanbag, and the participants have to do movements and steps with the ball or beanbag.
