Skipper Says

Skill: Balance, Jump
Time Required: 15
Activity Type: Physical
Group Size: Large Group, Medium Group, Small Group
Age Group: 6 - 9yrs, 9 - 12yrs
Play area: Gymnasium (large indoor space), Outdoor - Field
Safety Considerations: Ensure participants are spaced out.
Remove any safety hazards and obstacles from the play area.
Remind participants to be aware of their surroundings and to keep their head up.
Equipment: 1 skipping rope per participant
Objective:
For participants to do the appropriate skipping action when the leader says, "Skipper says..."
Other Skills:
Coordination
Set up:
Give each participant a skipping rope.
Have the participants spread out around the area. Ensure there is plenty of space between the participants, so that they won't hit each other with their skipping ropes.
The leader will stand in front of all the participants.
Step by Step:
1. Have participants practice skipping before doing this activity.
2. The leader will be standing facing the participants, and they are the "Skipper". Just like with Simon Says, whenever they say, "Skipper says...." then the participants have to do what the skipper says. If they don't say, "Skipper says" before saying an activity, then the participants do not do the activity.
3. Have participants start skipping with their skipping rope on the spot.
4. The Skipper will give different instructions for the participants to follow.
5. If the Skipper says, "Skipper says, jump just using the right foot", then participants have to skip and only use their right foot to jump.
6. If the Skipper says, "Skipper says, have the rope go under your feet twice with one jump", then the participants will jump high and swing the rope twice around before they land.
7. If a participant does not complete the activity, that's ok, just have them start skipping again. Or, if playing with elimination, then those participants would be out for the round.
8. If the Skipper says "Stop skipping", any participant that stops skipping is either out for that round, or has to do a set activity before they can skip back into the game (because they didn't say "Skipper says" first).
9. The leader can also say activities that don't involve skipping. Such as, if the leader says "Skipper says, stop skipping", the participants would stop skipping. "Skipper says, jump in the air", and the participants would jump in the air. "Skipper says, crouch down low", then the participants would crouch down low. "Start skipping", participants would not start skipping because they didn't say "Skipper says" first.
10. Play an elimination round, or play for a set amount of time.
11. Example of activities:
- Skip as fast as you can
- Double jump between each skip
- Keep jumping, but stop swinging the rope
- Jump on your left foot only
- Do a quarter turn
- Jump as high as you can
- Yell "Yahoooo!"
- Switch skipping ropes with a participant
- When you jump say "boing"
- Hold each handle with 2 fingers
- And so on.
Variations:
Don't have the "Skipper says" part, just have participants skip in different ways, and if they don't do the skill correctly, then they are out for the round or have to do a set exercise, like 5 squats.
