Time Required: 15
Activity Type: Physical
Group Size: Large Group, Medium Group, Small Group
Age Group: 6 - 9yrs, 9 - 12yrs, 13+ yrs
Play area: Gymnasium (large indoor space)
Safety Considerations: Remove any safety hazards and obstacles from the activity area.
Remind participants to be aware of their surroundings and to keep their head up.
Remind participants to always keep their blade on the ground.
Equipment: Hockey Sticks
Tennis Balls/Indoor Hockey Balls
Pylons (optional)
Objective:
Participants without a ball try to take a ball from the other participants.
Other Skills:
Coordination
Set up:
Use the outside lines of the gym for the boundaries, or set up pylons to make the boundaries smaller.
Ensure each participant has a hockey stick and a ball.
Step by Step:
1. The activity can start with all participants stick handling and walking/running around the activity space with their ball.
2. Remind participants to hold the hockey stick with two hands and to always keep their blade on the ground.
3. Tell participants to use both sides of their blade in order to control the ball and have it go in a straight line.
4. Encourage participants to keep the ball close to them. If they lose control or hit it too far in front of them, a participant on another team could take the ball from them (in a real game situation).
5. To add another element, every time the leader blows their whistle the participants have to stop with the ball against their blade.
6. Then the leader will tell them to go again, and they continue to run and stick handle.
7. This activity encourages participants to keep the ball close at all times, because they need to be able to stop with the ball quickly.
8. The last participant to stop their ball could have to do 5 jumping jacks or another exercise.
9. Keep Away:
10. All participants, except for 2 (or so) will start with a ball.
11. The 2 participants that do not have a ball are "It".
12. Their goal is to take another participant's ball with their hockey stick.
13. When they do, the participant that lost the ball is now "It" and the other participant now has a ball and will start to stick handle around the area. The new participant that is "It" cannot take the ball back from the participant that just stole it from them.
14. The participants that are "It" will give the other participants 10 seconds to start stick handling around the activity area before they enter the game.
15. If a participant goes out of bounds with their ball, then they are automatically "It".
16. Next Step: When "It" steals a ball from a participant, that participants joins the "It" team. Make sure they hit their ball out of play. Play until there is 1 or 2 participants left with a ball.
Variations:
A ball is considered stolen when it touches the blade of "It's" stick.
When a participant's ball is stolen, they are out for the round and have to stand outside the activity area. Place hoops in the activity area and if a participant gets their ball in a hoop, they are out for the round as well.
