Skill: Balance, Hop, Jump, Run
Time Required: 10
Activity Type: Physical
Group Size: Large Group, Medium Group, Small Group
Age Group: 6 - 9yrs, 9 - 12yrs, 13+ yrs
Play area: Gymnasium (large indoor space), Outdoor - Field
Safety Considerations: Ensure groups are spread out and not jumping too close to each other.
Remove any safety hazards and obstacles from the activity area.
Remind participants to be aware of their surroundings and to keep their head up when jumping.
Equipment: One or more "toys" per group (pylon, beanbag, tennis ball or anything else to represent a toy).
One hoop per group.
Objective:
Participants have to jump as a team to collect a "toy" and bring it back to their "room".
Other Skills:
Coordination
Set up:
Divide participants into groups of 3-4 participants.
Have each group start at one end of a gym or at one end of the activity space.
Place a hoop at the start for each group (the hoop represents the group's home).
Place a toy across from each hoop at the other end of the gym or around 20-25 metres away from each hoop.
Step by Step:
1. Each group will be standing next to their group's hoop.
2. Make sure the groups are spread out and not too close to each other.
3. The goal for each group is to jump to their toy on the other end of the activity space and then jump it back to their home (hoop).
4. Each group will number themselves off starting from one. Participants will jump in this order.
5. The leader will say what kind of jump each participant is going to do.
6. Different jumps: standing jump, running jump, one foot jump, frog jump (crouch down and jump) and other jumps the leader wants to use.
7. The leader says something along the lines of "Participant one do a standing jump" and the first participant in each group will do a standing jump from the start.
8. Next the leader could say, "Participant two, do a running jump". The number two participants from each group will run and then jump when they line up with the first participant.
9. Whenever a participant jumps, they jump from where their last group member landed.
10. Next, participant three will jump and then participant four (if there are four participants in a group).
11. When it is number one's turn again, they will leave their spot and go next to the last participant and do the designated jump.
12. When a participant gets to the toy, they will pick it up and their group members will join them at the toy location.
13. The participant that is jumping will always be holding the toy. The participant that just jumped will hand it off to the next jumper.
14. The participants continue to jump going the other way.
15. When a participant with the toy is standing right next to their home (hoop), they can drop it in.
16. Optional to have two or more toys and participants have to bring them all back.
Variations:
The leader will give a jumping pattern to participants that have to follow. It could be a standing jump, then running jump, then frog jump then 1 foot jump. Participants have to jump in this order the whole way to the toy and back.
When jumping back with the toy, the participant that picked up the toy will be the only one allowed to put it in their hoop.
Participants are allowed to throw the toy into the hoop, but if it misses they have to go back to the other end.
